Tech Review: The Dell Inspiron 15 Signature Edition

Tech Review: The Dell Inspiron 15 Signature Edition

In my previous technology blog post titled THREE REASONS WHY YOU NEED TO TEACH YOUR PARENTS HOW TO USE A COMPUTER, I shared a little bit about my Mom's new Dell Inspiron 15 and I explained the importance of teaching our non-tech-savvy family members how to use a computer. I have to say that I was as excited as my Mom to play with her new laptop. My current laptop does not have many of the cool features that the DELL INSPIRON 15  has, so in order to teach my Mom how to use it properly, I had to teach myself too.
The DELL INSPIRON 15 SERIES is a Signature Edition computer that comes armed with:
  • i5 Intel Processor
  • A 15.6 Full HD Touchscreen
  • 8 GB Memory
  • 1 TB Hard Drive
  • Windows 10 Operating System
  • DVD Entry
  • SD Card Reader
  • Bluetooth
  • 3D Camera
  • Ports: 1 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0, HDMI and Headphone output and Microphone Input
The device retails for less than $500. The operating system is awesome as it allows you to navigate every aspect of the computer easily. I also like that it has a DVD entry because you save money on buying an external DVD reader (port). I still need to install programs using the DVD entry player and I still watch DVD's on my computer; thus, having it pre-installed, is a huge plus!

What is the difference between the Signature edition computers and non-Signature editions?
  • It Is Clean- it does not come with third party pre-installed applications, which means your computer will run smoothly for a longer time.
  • Turns On/Off Faster- According to Microsoft, the Signature  Edition computers on average turn on 104% faster than non-Signature Edition computers and turn off 34% faster as well.
  • More Protection- Signature computers come equipped with Windows Defender. You do not need to pay for it and it has free updates; whereas, other computers come with trial versions and require you to update them and pay for them.

Setting up the computer was super quick and easy and we were able to start using it right away.

My Favorite Microsoft Dell Inspiron Features Are:
  1. Miranda- I can easily speak to Miranda and ask her a series of commands. I can quickly search for content and ask her to open a series of applications. I see this as a huge plus for my Mom's computer learning process.
  2. One Note- The device comes equipped with One Note, which you can use without having to purchase the entire Microsoft Office program. Since the computer has touchscreen it is super easy to use and draw on it, making note-taking much easier. It is now one of my favorite apps to plan my blog posts. I have the feeling I will be borrowing this laptop from my Mom quite frequently. This is an amazing tool for students as well. I wish I had it back in my College days.
  3. Customizable Start Menu- By far my #1 favorite feature is the fact that you can customize your start menu. You can add the applications you use the most and have quick access to them.
  4. Separate Number Keypad- If you do a lot of budgeting or quickbooks, I think you will appreciate this feature. I plan on teaching my mom how to take her budget from print to digital and the side number keypad makes it easier to input your data.
  5.  Free Classes With Microsoft Purchase- Microsoft offers free technical support and classes to help you set up your device and learn a variety of techniques at your own pace. You are also allowed to take a friend and they even offer classes in Spanish at some locations. I already took my mom to her first session and I cannot tell you how helpful it was. Overall, if you are looking to get a new computer, you do not need to spend thousands of dollars to get an amazing laptop. MICROSOFT offers a large array of options in different price ranges and, like I shared before, they even offer ONE-ON-ONE CLASSES TO TEACH YOU HOW TO USE YOUR NEW DEVICE.

On my next blog post you will learn about my Mom's in-store experience, but I can say that these classes are totally worth it. Stay tuned to learn why.
